Waites, Dawson Help Tigers to 6-5 Win at UNA

FLORENCE, Ala.Dominique Dawson singled through a drawn-in infield to drive in the winning run in the 10th inning and Cole Waites pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball as West Alabama held on to defeat North Alabama, 6-5, Tuesday at Mike Lane Field.

Waites, a preseason All-Gulf South Conference selection, struck out 14 and walked five, but did not figure in the decision. Christian Griffin (2-0) allowed a hit, hit four batters and allowed three unearned runs to pick up the win in relief of Waites. Nick Rathke worked a perfect bottom of the 10th for his second save. UNA reliever Nick Cummings (0-1) took the loss.

Waites sat down 13 straight Lions hitters between the second and sixth innings and did not allow a hit through seven innings. Peyton Sockwell drew a walk to open the bottom of the seventh inning to end that streak. Waites struck out two batters in every inning he pitched.

Three UWA pitchers tied a school record by striking out 19 in the game. Griffin had two in each of his innings and Rathke one. The record was set in 1992 in a game against Delta State.

"Cole (Waites) pitched really well after he got settled in. He had good command from the second inning on," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Christian (Griffin) struggled some in the ninth, but in his defense, that was the first time he had been on the mound in a game in two weeks. Rathke came in a shut the door in the 10th."

The win improved West Alabama's record to 8-13 with top-ranked Delta State visiting Tartt Field for a three-game series beginning Saturday at 2 p.m. North Alabama is 14-8 and travels to Montevallo for three games starting Saturday.

North Alabama got on the scoreboard first by scoring two runs in the second inning without the aid of a base hit. The Lions used a pair of walks, two hit batters, a passed ball and a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead.

North Alabama tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth on Ridge Watson's single, four hit batters and a two-run Tiger error.

Dominique Dawson singled through a drawn in infield in the top of the 10th to score Hartman, who had walked to open the inning, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Colden Peeples.

"We just needed a win of any kind. We need some confidence," Rundles said. "UNA is a good baseball team and we battled back every time we needed to today."
