Peeples Single Lifts Tigers to Win over William Carey

LIVINGSTONColden Peeples drove in two runs with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to lift West Alabama to a 4-2 college baseball win over William Carey Wednesday at Tartt Field.

The hit was just the second of the season for the true freshman from Lutz, Florida and gives him five runs batted in for the season. Peeples entered the game as a pinch runner in the sixth inning and got the game-winning hit in his only at bat.

"What a good job by Colden Peeples. That was a big hit," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "He came up big in a big situation. Hopefully, he will continue to gain confidence by having success."

West Alabama (9-13) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ben Dalke drove in Luke Phillips, who had singled with two outs. The Tigers got three hits with two outs in the inning and didn't score again until the seventh.

William Carey (19-9) plated two runs in the third without the aid of a hit. The Crusaders parlayed four walks, a passed ball, a wild pitch and a stolen base into two runs.

West Alabama tied the game in the seventh when Dominique Dawson singled, moved to second on a walk by Brock Montgomery and scored when WCU third baseman Tyler Evans booted a ground ball off the bat of Luke Phillips. Peeples two-out hit then sealed the deal.

Nick Rathke (1-0) picked up the pitching win in relief, allowing no runs on a hit while striking out three in two innings pitched. Christian Griffin earned his second save despite allowing a run on no hits in the ninth. Four West Alabama pitchers allowed just four hits and struck out 16, but walked 10.

WCU starter Conner McWilliams (1-4) took the loss, allowing six hits and one earned run over 6.1 innings.

West Alabama managed seven hits by seven different players, all singles. All four of William Carey's hits were singles as well.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at Christian Brothers. First pitch in Memphis is scheduled for noon. WCU continues a four-game road swing at Martin Methodist.
