DSU Sweeps Tigers, 7-6 and 4-1

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Delta State first baseman Zack Shannon went 5-for-7 with two home runs and a triple as the top-ranked Statesmen swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from West Alabama Saturday at Tartt Field.

Delta State (19-2, 10-1) held off a late West Alabama (8-15, 4-7) rally to win the first game, 7-6, before winning the nightcap, 4-1.

Shannon's pair of homers gives him 17 for the season and his four runs batted in lifts his total to 48 in just 21 games. He was a double away from hitting for the cycle in the first game before homering again in game two. Shannon finished the doubleheader raising his batting average to .494.

Brian Lane also homered for Delta State in game two, his third of the year, to stake the Statesmen to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Shannon's second homer accounted for the third run in the top of the sixth and Clay Casey doubled and scored on a wild pitch to finish DSU scoring in the nightcap.

West Alabama's lone run in the second game came in the sixth inning when Dominique Dawson reached on an error and later scored on a single by Joel Murphy.

Trailing 6-1 before cutting the DSU lead to 7-5 going into the ninth inning of game one, West Alabama scored a run in the ninth to cut the lead to the final 7-6 margin. Luke Phillips took a questionable called third strike with the bases loaded to end the game.

Dawson and Austin Moffett hit their first homers of the year in game two, Dawson's a solo shot in the second inning and Moffett's a two-run blast in the sixth. Ben Dalke's two-out single drove in two runs in the eighth for the Tigers and Moffett drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth.

Delta State starters Seth Birdsong (4-0) and Dalton Minton (4-0) picked up the pitching wins, with Minton going the distance in the second game. Melvin Frazier got two outs in the ninth inning of game one for his first save.

West Alabama starting pitchers JT Salter (2-2) and Layton Dill (0-1) absorbed the losses.

Moffett, Dawson and Dalke each had three hits in the twinbill for UWA. Nick Morgan had three hits for Delta State.

West Alabama is host to William Carey Wednesday at 3 p.m. Delta State travels to Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday.
