Christian Brothers Sweeps Tigers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers scored early and made it stand up in both games as the Buccaneers swept West Alabama in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Nadicksbernd Field.
 
CBU jumped to a 4-0 lead after two innings in game one and survived a late UWA rally to win, 4-3. The Bucs jumped to a 5-2 lead after two innings in game two and hung on for a 5-4 victory.
 
Christian Brothers improved to 9-19 overall, 3-11 in GSC play. West Alabama is 9-17 and 4-9.
 
West Alabama had beaten Christian Brothers nine straight times before being swept Saturday. The last Tiger loss to the Bucs was a 1-0 setback in the 2014 GSC Tournament. The Tigers had won 18 consecutive regular season games over CBU.
 
CBU starter Peyton Sanderlin (3-5) went the distance for the win in game one, striking out 10 without walking a batter. He scattered seven hits and allowed three runs, two earned. UWA starter Layton Dill (0-2) went seven innings to absorb the game one loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits.
 
Buccaneer reliever Ryan Taylor (1-3) worked 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four to earn the game two win. Nick Myers picked up his first save by allowing just one hit over three innings. UWA starter JT Salter (2-3) went the distance to take the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits while walking six and striking out 10.
 
Ben Dalke and Gavin Rogers had two hits apiece in game one for the Tigers. Rogers and Austin Moffett drove in runs. Joel Murphy went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for UWA in game two. Moffett chipped in two hits in the second game. Murphy, Peeples and Rogers drove in runs.
 
Jaime Soto went 4-for-6 in the twinbill for Christian Brothers. Nick Traylor had three hits in the two games for the Bucs.
 
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. CBU will not offer a live video feed, but ESPN 104.9 will have the live broadcast in the Twin States area and worldwide at www.twinstatesmedia.com.
