Waites Strikes Out School Record 18 in Tigers Win at CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Cole Waites struck out a school-record 18 batters as West Alabama cruised to a 10-1 Gulf South Conference college baseball win Sunday at Christian Brothers.

A preseason All-GSC selection, Waites (2-3), scattered three hits and did not walk a batter while going the distance for the record and the win. The previous record was held by Charlie Hobson, who fanned 17 against Central Methodist in 1973.

The 18 strikeouts by Waites ties for third-highest in GSC history. The conference record is 21 by Ted Barnicle of Jacksonville State against Sewanne in 1975 and is the most in conference play since 1991 when Tim VanEgmond of Jacksonville State fanned 18 Troy hitters.

The sophomore from Lawrenceville, Georgia now struck out 32 over his last 16 innings pitched. He has fanned 50 over 30.2 innings pitched this season.

"Cole had total control and threw strikes," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "He had command and worked both sides of the plate."

Waites had plenty of support from Joel Murphy, who collected four hits and Ben Dalke, who drove in five runs. Three of Dalke's RBI came on his third home run of the year. Dalke, Gavin Rogers and Luke Phillips each had two hits in a 12-hit UWA attack. Brock Montgomery drive in two.

Murphy's 4-for-5 day gives him seven hits in his last nine at bats as the Tigers scored double-digit runs for just the third time this season.

West Alabama (10-17, 5-9) blew open a tight game by scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Christian Brothers (9-20, 3-12) lone run came in the second inning when Keagan Voss' safety squeeze scored Jared Cramer.

"It was nice to see our guys having fun playing baseball again," Rundles said. "I told them before we started today that we were starting at 0-0 beginning today. It was fun to see them doing the things you need to do to win baseball games."

Cramer, Jaime Soto and Parker Jordan were the only Buccaneers to manage a hit off Waites. The Bucs assisted the Tigers offense by making five errors.

West Alabama steps out of conference play by traveling to William Carey on Wednesday before hosting rival North Alabama for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. Christian Brothers is host to Harding on Tuesday.
