Tigers Hang on to Beat William Carey, 11-9

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – West Alabama scored early and often before having to rally late in the game for an 11-9 college baseball win over William Carey Wednesday at Milton Wheeler Field.
 
The win improved West Alabama to 11-17, while William Carey dropped to 22-10 with its second loss to the Tigers in eight days.
 
West Alabama came out of the gate slashing, scoring six runs on six hits in the top of the first inning. Brodie Townsend and Austin Moffett had doubles to drive in runs as the tail end of six consecutive Tiger hits in the inning.
 
William Carey pushed across four runs against three UWA pitchers in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of a bloop single, an infield hit, three walks and two hit batters.
 
The Tigers added a run back in the fifth when Moffett doubled again, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Crusaders third baseman Marcus Buckley. Gavin Rogers drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a throwing error to stretch the West Alabama lead to 8-4.
 
William Carey cut the UWA lead to 8-7 in the sixth inning, taking advantage of two bunt singles, an infield hit and an error to plate three runs. The Crusaders tied the game at 8-8 on a Caleb Ledet RBI single in the seventh.
 
UWA pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth inning on RBI doubles by Luke Phillips and Ben Dalke, along with a sacrifice fly by Rogers.
 
JC Redden (1-0), the eighth of nine UWA pitchers, worked two innings in relief for the win. Christian Griffin struck out the side in the ninth despite allowing a run for his third save. Devin Smith (5-2) took the loss in relief for William Carey.
 
Brock Montgomery had three hits to pace a 12-hit Tiger attack, seven of which were doubles. Townsend and Rogers drove in two runs apiece.
 
Caleb Ledet went 4-for-4 to lead William Carey.
 
West Alabama returns home to host North Alabama in a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
