Tigers, Lions Split GSC Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON – West Alabama got a complete game from pitcher JT Salter and home runs by Ben Dalke and Joel Murphy to beat North Alabama, 7-2, in game two and earn a split of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. UNA won game one, 5-3.

Dalke's fourth homer of the year came with one out and Murphy on base in the first inning of game two to spot the Tigers to a 2-0 advantage. North Alabama (20-12, 11-6) tied the score at 2-2 on a two-run double by Ben Cooley in the third.

Murphy put the game away with a three-run blast, his first of the year, in the fourth inning. Luke Phillips and Gavin Rogers both contributed RBI singles in a five-run inning for West Alabama (12-18, 6-10).

North Alabama scored three runs in the ninth to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat in the first game, using three hits, two walks and a Tiger error to secure the come-from-behind win.

Salter (3-3) struck out 12 and walked four to pick up the win in game two. UNA starter Lane Wallace (4-4) took the loss, allowing six runs in 3.2 innings.

North Alabama starter Tyler Joiner (5-3) picked up the win in game one, striking out 11 in eight innings. Channing Wall got the final three outs for his fifth save. UWA reliever Nick Rathke (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

Dalke went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader and extended his hitting streak to nine games. Murphy was 2-for-4 and reached four times via walks out of the West Alabama leadoff spot.

North Alabama leadoff man TJ Lockett went 4-for-8 in the two games and drew a pair of walks. Tate Mathis hit his second homer of the season, a solo shot in the second inning of game one.
