UNA Takes Series With 8-4 Victory over UWA

LIVINGSTON – North Alabama rapped out 11 hits and coaxed 10 walks from five West Alabama pitchers on the way to an 8-4 Gulf South Conference college baseball win over the Tigers Saturday at Tartt Field.
 
The win improved North Alabama to 21-12 overall, 12-6 in GSC play. West Alabama is 12-19 and 6-11.
 
West Alabama managed nine hits, with the top four batters in the order combining to go 8-for-19. The bottom five for the Tigers were 1-for-15.
 
The Lions parlayed four walks and one hit into two runs in the second inning and added a single run in the third on two hits and a hit batter to take a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the third inning.
 
West Alabama scored two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Colden Peeples' triple drove in Joel Murphy, who singled to start the third before Luke Phillips chased Peeples with a single. Gavin Rogers' sacrifice fly and Phillips scoring on a wild pitch accounted for UWA's runs in the fifth inning.
 
North Alabama regained a lead it would not relinquish with a pair of runs on three hits in the seventh and then tacked on three more on three hits in the eighth to put the game away. Ben Cooley drove in two with a two-out single in the seventh. Brandt Holland, Peyton Sockwell and Davis Elliott had runs batted in in the eighth.
 
Murphy, Peeples, Phillips and Ben Dalke all had two hits for West Alabama. Dalke extended his hitting streak to 10 games and Murphy his to six. Dalke went 6-for-13 with a home run in the series for UWA and Murphy was 4-for-9 with four walks.
 
Tate Mathis, Logan Carter and Holland had two hits apiece for North Alabama.
 
UNA starter Shane Priest (5-1) worked seven innings for the win, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out nine and walking three. West Alabama reliever Colton Morgan (0-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three.
 
West Alabama remains in GSC play with a single game Friday at Alabama Huntsville. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. North Alabama is host to Blue Mountain College Tuesday at 5 p.m.
