Chargers Shut Out Tigers in Game 1 of GSC Series

HUNTSVILLE – Jake Bracewell pitched a complete game shutout as Alabama Huntsville defeated West Alabama, 7-0, in Gulf South Conference baseball Saturday at Charger Park.
 
Huntsville improved to 21-15 with the win, 10-9 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 12-20 and 6-12 on a 38-degree night with the wind chill at 29.
 
Bracewell (4-3) scattered seven hits, struck out nine and walked two on his way to the win. West Alabama starter Layton Dill (0-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on 12 hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked two.
 
UAH scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third when Jay Copeland and Lance Cleveland had back-to-back two-out doubles. Copeland's two-bagger drove in two. The Chargers added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to stretch the lead to 5-0.
 
Two hits and two hit batters allowed the Chargers to add two more runs in the eighth for the final margin. Three West Alabama pitchers hit five UAH batters.
 
West Alabama did not advance a runner to third base until the fifth inning and had just three the entire game. The Tigers left nine runners and UAH left 13.
 
Brady Bedingfield had three of Alabama-Huntsville's 14 hits. AJ Walden, Nolan Ramsey and Copeland chipped in two hits apiece. Copeland also drive in three runs.
 
Ben Dalke had two of UWA's seven hits, including a double. Ryan Hughes also doubled for the Tigers.
 
The Tigers and Chargers are scheduled to finish the series with a doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on ESPN 104.9 in the Twin States coverage area and will be streamed at www.twinstatesmedia.com.
