Valdosta State Beats Tigers, 9-7, in 10 Innings

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Valdosta State came from behind twice to send the game to extra innings before hanging on for a 9-7 Gulf South Conference baseball victory in 10 innings over West Alabama Sunday at Tartt Field.

With the game tied at 4-4 after nine, Valdosta State (7-11, 1-5) ignited for five runs in the top of the 10th and then held off a UWA (5-11, 3-3) rally in the bottom of the frame to break a six-game losing streak. The Blazers sent 10 to the plate in the 10th, getting run-scoring singles from Kendall Herron, Carson McCullers and Ross Goforth.

West Alabama managed three runs in the bottom of the 10th on an RBI double by Brock Montgomery and a two-out, two-run single from Ryan Hughes before Sean Gabel caught Dominique Dawson looking to end the game.

West Alabama led 1-0 and 4-2 before Dalton Murray belted a two-run home run over the wall in left field to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning. The homer was Murray's second of the season.

The Tigers managed just six hits, but Tiger head coach Gary Rundles pointed to eight walks and five hit batters by UWA pitchers as the key to the game.

"Throwing strikes is the name of the game," Rundles said. "When you don't do that, and when you give up 13 free bases with walks or hit batters, it is hard to win in this league or any league."

Gabel (2-2), the fourth Valdosta State pitcher in the game, earned the win. He allowed four hits and three unearned runs over the final three innings, striking out five and not walking anyone. Cole Waites (0-3), the third of five UWA pitchers took the loss, allowing two earned runs on a hit while walking four in two innings pitched.

Montgomery and Hughes had two hits apiece for West Alabama. Ben Dalke drove in a run with a first-inning single.

Herron, Murray, White and Nick Koslowski all had two hits in an 11-hit Blazer attack. Murray added a double to his home run.

West Alabama opens a five-game road swing at Spring Hill on Wednesday. Valdosta State also plays out of conference on Wednesday by hosting Flagler.
