AUM Downs Tigers for First GSC Win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Auburn-Montgomery starting pitcher Garrett Deloney did not allow an earned run over seven innings as the Warhawks defeated West Alabama, 6-1, for the first Gulf South Conference baseball win in program history.

The win improves AUM to 7-10 overall, 1-6 in GSC play. UWA is 6-12 and 3-4. The two teams are scheduled to finish the three-game series with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is 11 a.m.

Deloney (2-1) scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out seven to pick up the pitching win. He allowed an unearned run in the first inning of his longest outing of the season. West Alabama starter Steffon Moore (3-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits while walking seven and striking out five.

West Alabama got on the board first, scoring its only run in the top of the first when Austin Moffett singled and later scored on a Warhawk error. AUM answered with four in the bottom of the inning, using two hits, four walks and two wild pitches to take a lead it would not relinquish.

The Warhawks scored two more runs in the fourth inning, utilizing a pair of walks, two hits, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Tiger reliever Layton Dill shut AUM down from there, not allowing a run on four hits over 4.2 innings pitched.

Joel Murphy and Luke Phillips had two hits each in an eight-hit West Alabama attack. Nathan Langley, Logan Nix and Aaron Hill had two hits apiece for AUM, who finished with nine hits. Neither team managed an extra base hit.
