Tigers Make Most of Middle Innings for Win over Union

LIVINGSTONLayton Dill went the distance while Luke Phillips and Austin Moffett got three hits each to lead West Alabama to a 9-1 Gulf South Conference baseball win over Union Sunday at Tartt Field.

The win improves UWA to 15-21 overall, 9-12 in GSC play. Union drops to 12-27 and 6-16. The Tigers and the Bulldogs are scheduled to complete the series with a doubleheader Monday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Dill (1-3) earned his first complete game win of the season, striking out 13, walking three and scattering seven hits. Union starter JR Miller (4-5) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and eight runs in six-plus innings pitched.

"Layton was in command tonight," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "He threw strikes and was efficient.

"We started a little sluggish offensively, but got going in the middle innings," Rundles said. "We got 10 of our 13 hits in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings."

Union scored first, pushing across its only run in the top of the fifth on three hits. Chase Diggs, who was the only Bulldog with two hits, drove in the run.

West Alabama answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Hughes, an RBI groundout by Joel Murphy and an RBI single from Ben Dalke. Hughes belted his first homer as a Tiger, a two-run shot in the sixth.

The Tigers put the game away with three runs in the seventh. Brock Montgomery and Gavin Rogers drove in runs in singles, and after doubling and moving to third on Montgomery's hit, Phillips scored on a wild pitch.

Phillips doubled again in the eighth to drive in Moffett, who picked up his third single to open the inning. Rogers chipped in a pair of hits for UWA.
