UWA Sweeps DH, Series from Union

LIVINGSTONJoel Murphy had a walk-off infield single in game one and the Tigers had five doubles in game two on the way to a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over Union Monday at Tartt Field. UWA won the first game, 6-5, in 11 innings and hung on for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

By sweeping the three-game series from Union (12-29, 6-18), West Alabama (17-21, 11-12) climbed over West Georgia and Alabama Huntsville to the No. 7 spot in the GSC standings. The Tigers are mere percentage points ahead of the Chargers and Wolves. UWA's winning percentage is .478, compared to .458 for West Georgia and .435 for UAH.

The top eight teams make the tournament field, but West Alabama still has Mississippi College (26-10, 15-7) and Montevallo (30-13, 16-7) to play.

West Alabama led 5-1 after six innings in the first game, only to have Union score two runs in the seventh and single runs in the eighth and ninth to send the game to extra innings. Murphy's high chopper to third base scored Dominique Dawson, who had singled to lead off the 11th.

West Alabama scored four runs in the second inning of game one when Brock Montgomery had an RBI double, Johnathan Thibodeau a single to drive in a run and Ryan Hughes hit his second home run in as many days, a two-run shot over the wall in left field.

Ben Dalke and Dawson both doubled in runs in the first inning of the second game to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs scored in the top half on a triple from Chase Diggs and a single by David Robins.

Union scratched its way to a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Hayden Lewis doubled in a run and later scored on a Tiger throwing error.

West Alabama got a two-run double from Dawson and benefitted from a catcher's interference ruling to score three in the sixth. Zane Phillips doubled in a run for Union in the top of the seventh for the final margin in game two.

West Alabama reliever Nick Rathke (2-1) picked up the win in game one, striking out three in three innings pitched. Union reliever Scott Shearer (4-8) absorbed the loss. JT Salter (5-3) threw his fifth complete game for the win in game two, striking out 11 and walking three. Skyler Harrison (2-7) went the distance for the loss, allowing nine hits, walking five and striking out seven.

Murphy, Dalke and Dawson collected four hits in the doubleheader for UWA, who has won five straight GSC games. Montgomery, Dalke and Dawson had two doubles each, while Dawson drove in four runs.

Robins had four hits in the two games for Union.

West Alabama plays its final non-conference game Wednesday in Birmingham at historic Rickwood Field against Miles College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Union plays at Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday.
