PLEASANT GROVE –
Dominique Dawson and
Luke Phillips homered for West Alabama and the Tigers exploded for six runs in the ninth inning on the way to an 11-4 college baseball win over Miles College Wednesday at the Pleasant Grove Athletic Complex.
The win is the fourth straight and the sixth in the last seven games for the Tigers (18-21). Miles (24-17) has lost two straight.
West Alabama got on the board first when
Dominique Dawson singled to start the second inning and was driven in on a
Brock Montgomery triple. Montgomery scored on a sacrifice fly by
Luke Phillips to make it 2-0 Tigers.
Miles got a solo home run from Reeves Brashear in the bottom of the third cut the UWA lead in half.
Dawson hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot to left field in the top of the fourth. Montgomery then walked and came around to score on a single off the bat of
Jonathan Thibodeau to make it 4-1 UWA.
Miles tied the game with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Golden Bears took advantage of a pair of hits and two UWA errors in the fourth, while Xavius Burden hit his second home run, a solo shot in the fifth.
West Alabama regained the lead with a solo homer by
Luke Phillips in the top of the sixth, his second of the year.
The Tigers put the game away with a six-run top of the ninth. The big blows were two-run doubles by
Joel Murphy and
Gavin Rogers.
UWA starter
Steffon Moore (4-3) earned the win for the Tigers, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking three over five innings.
Christian Griffin and
Nick Rathke shut out the Golden Bears the rest of the way. MC starter Lucas Howton (0-3) took the loss.
Every player in the West Alabama lineup contributed to a 15-hit attack. Murphy, Dawson, Phillips, Rogers and
Austin Moffett had two hits each. Phillips, Rogers and Murphy drove in two runs.
Burden and Kolby Brannon had two hits each for Miles.
West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play at Mississippi College at 4 p.m. on Friday. Miles is host to Lemoyne-Owen in a doubleheader Saturday.
