Mississippi College Uses Big Innings to Beat UWA

CLINTON– Mississippi College rapped out 15 hits and scored at least three runs in three separate innings to beat West Alabama, 13-4, in game one of a three-game Gulf South Conference baseball series Friday at Dickins-Scoper Stadium.

Every player in the Mississippi College (27-11, 16-7) lineup scored at least one run as four West Alabama (18-22, 11-13) pitchers allowed a season-high 15 hits for the second time this season.

The Tigers and Choctaws were tied at 2-2 before Mississippi College exploded for five runs on five hits in the fifth inning. The Tigers answered with two runs in the top of the sixth but wouldn't scratch the rest of the way. The Choctaws added three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to put the game out of reach.

Kyle Smith went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and stole his 17thbase to lead the Mississippi College attack. Grant Barber, Luke Yancy and TY Alderman had two hits apiece for the Choctaws. Barber drove in three runs.

Gavin Rogers had three hits and drove in two runs to lead West Alabama. Joel Murphy chipped in two hits.

MC starting pitcher Chris Cosby (5-3) scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs over six-plus innings to earn the win. Brandon Kennedy worked the required three innings in relief for his first save. UWA starter Layton Dill (1-4) allowed nine hits and six earned runs over 4.1 innings to take the loss.

The Tigers and Choctaws finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
