Tigers Salvage Split in GSC Doubleheader at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss.Lincoln Stubbs and Ryan Hughes hit back-to-back home runs on back-to-back pitches in the fifth inning and West Alabama held off a Mississippi College rally to beat the Choctaws, 4-3, and salvage a doubleheader split Saturday at Dickin-Scoper Stadium.

Mississippi College defeated the Tigers, 6-2, in game one. The split leaves West Alabama 19-23 overall and 12-14 in Gulf South Conference play. Mississippi College is 28-12 and 17-8.

The Choctaws are one of four teams that have already earned a spot in the GSC Tournament that begins May 5 at the site of the regular season champion. West Alabama currently sits in the eighth and final spot for the tourney with three games to play at home against Montevallo (31-14, 17-8) this weekend.

Mississippi College used a four-run seventh inning to put away the first game and three Choctaw pitchers limited the Tigers to just two hits. Blaine Crim hit his ninth homer, a two-run blast to highlight the big inning.

Luke Phillips hit his third homer of the year to straight-away center in the second inning and Ben Dalke scored on a MC throwing error in the ninth to account for UWA scoring in game one.

In addition to the homers by Stubbs and Hughes in game two, Ben Dalke drove in two runs with singles in the first and fifth innings.

JT Salter (6-3) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, to pick up the win in game two. Nick Rathke earned his third save by getting only two hitters he faced to ground out and strike out. MC starter Hunter Mullis (5-3) was the loser.

Zack Ingram (5-0) worked eight innings, striking out nine and walking one for the win in the first game. UWA starter Cole Waites (3-4) took the loss.

Dalke, Stubbs and Joel Murphy had two hits each for the Tigers in game two. In addition to his first home run, Stubbs also doubled. Hughes' homer was his third.
