Tiger Postseason Fate Boils Down to Final Day of Regular Season

LIVINGSTON – Whether or not West Alabama's baseball season continues into the postseason has boiled down to the last day of the regular season after the Tigers were swept in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader by Montevallo Saturday at Tartt Field. Montevallo beat the Tigers 15-0 and 5-1.

The Tigers (19-25, 12-16) have to win Sunday, or have Alabama Huntsville (22-22, 11-16) lose at home to North Alabama, to earn the final spot in the GSC Tournament that begins Saturday in Cleveland, Mississippi on the campus of Delta State University.

First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Sunday. Eight West Alabama seniors will be honored in pregame ceremonies as the Tigers close the regular season.

Montevallo starting pitchers Cas Silber and Alex Pondick limited West Alabama to just one run and eight hits over the twinbill. Both went the distance for the wins, with Silber (9-4) striking out 12 and allowing just three hits in game one and Pondick (7-1) allowing a run on five hits while striking out seven in the second game.

Tiger starters Cole Waites (3-5) and Steffon Moore (4-4) took the losses. Waites struck out 10, but allowed seven runs over six innings. Moore struck out 12, but ended up giving up all five Falcon runs.

Leading 2-0 after five innings in the first game the Falcons combined to send 24 batters to the plate and score 13 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to cause the game to be called after seven innings due to the GSC mercy rule.

Chad Wagner and Sebastian Samuels had four hits apiece in a 17-hit Montevallo attack in game one. Jason Cryar drive in three runs and homered. The 17 Montevallo hits and 15 earned runs were both season highs by a UWA opponent.

The Falcons managed just four hits in the second game, with Cryar getting two of those to give him four hits and five RBI in the doubleheader. He also hit his third home run of the season. Tyler Krabbe hit his fifth homer, a two-run shot in the sixth inning of game two.

Joel Murphy picked up two of West Alabama's three hits in the first game. Tyler Hughes had a pair of hits and drove in the Tigers only run in game two.
