Tigers Clinch Final Spot in GSC Baseball Tournament

LIVINGSTON – West Alabama scored three runs in the second inning and JT Salter made it stand up as the Tigers claimed the final spot in the 2018 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships with a 3-2 win over Montevallo Sunday at Tartt Field.

The Tigers will take a 20-25 record and the No. 8 seed into the conference tournament against hosting Delta State Saturday at McCool Stadium. Game time is still to be determined. The Tigers finished the regular season with a 13-16 conference record.

Montevallo is the second seed in the tournament with a 34-15 record. The Falcons, who finished with a 20-9 GSC mark, will play No. 7 Lee on opening day of the tournament.

Montevallo got off to a 1-0 lead in Sunday's regular-season finale for both teams when Chad Wagner doubled in Caleb Ledbetter in the top of the first inning, but West Alabama answered with three runs on two hits and a Falcon error in the bottom of the second.

Dominique Dawson drove in a run with a single and Ryan Hughes' sacrifice fly drove in another. Dawson scored when Falcon starting pitcher Chrit Rudkin threw away a pickoff attempt with runners at first and third.

Montevallo pushed across an unearned run in the fourth. Wagner reached on a fielder's choice and was chased home by a two-out single by Jared Nixon. The inning had opened with Ledbetter reaching on a dropped fly ball by Dawson.

Salter (7-3) went nine innings for the win, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out eight. Salter finished the season with 107 strikeouts and six complete games. Rudkin (5-3) allowed all three runs in three innings pitched, walking one and striking out three.

Ben Dalke had a single and a double to lead a five-hit West Alabama attack. Nobody had multiple hits for Montevallo.
