Tigers Sweep UAH in Sunday Doubleheader

HUNTSVILLE – West Alabama put together solid pitching performances and solid hitting on the way to sweeping Alabama Huntsville in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at Charger Park. UWA won the first game, 6-3, and the second, 3-0.

The sweep of the twinbill gave West Alabama (14-20, 8-12) a win in the three-game series over UAH (21-17, 10-11) and is the first conference series win for the Tigers since winning two of three from Valdosta State on March 3-4. UAH won the first game in the series, 7-0, on Saturday.

JT Salter (3-3) went the distance in the second game for his fourth complete game of the season and his second straight. Salter scattered five hits, walked two and struck out 10, giving him six double-digit strikeout games, the last three straight. UAH starter Riley Camp (1-2) took the game two loss.

Game one starter Cole Waites (3-3) allowed just two earned runs on six hits, striking out eight in six innings of game one. Colton Morgan earned his first save by sitting down all nine batters he faced in three innings, striking out three. Charger starter Hunter Hood (1-4) was the loser.

Alabama Huntsville jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings in game one, but West Alabama scored a run in the third and four in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. The Tigers pushed across an insurance run in the seventh for the final margin.

The Tigers used two hits, while Ben Dalke and Like Phillips were hit by pitches with the bases loaded to give UWA a lead it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the day.

Joel Murphy had three of UWA's 10 hits in the opener. Ryan Hughes and Austin Moffett chipped in two hits each.

Brock Montgomery carried the Tigers at the plate in the second game, coming up a triple short of the cycle and hitting his second homer of the year, a two-run shot over the wall in right in the fourth inning. Jonathan Thibodeau had two hits in the nightcap, including an RBI single in the second inning.

Jay Copeland was the only Charger to have multiple hits in either game, rapping out a pair of singles in game two and getting three hits in the doubleheader. Tiger pitchers combined to strike out 21 Chargers in the two games.

West Alabama hosts Spring Hill on Wednesday at Tartt Field to start a four-game homestand. First pitch is 3 p.m. UAH is host to Mississippi College in a GSC doubleheader on Saturday.
