Volleyball Roars Back with Sweep in Day Two of Bellarmine Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.– The West Alabama Tigers found the winning formula today and didn't drop a single set today during the second day of the Bellarmine Kickoff Classic to wrap the first tournament of the season.

UWA moves to 3-2 on the season with the victories.

"This weekend was a great test for us. We knew we were coming to play great competition and were excited to see where we stood as a team. The first day hit us hard and we learned a lot about our weaknesses and where our gaps were as far as team chemistry," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "We talked a lot that night about what we needed to adjust for our last two matches and came out and executed what we needed to win. Excited that we are coming out of the weekend with two wins, but we understand we have a long way to go to get to where we want to be at the end of season. Proud of our kids for responding today and handling adversity to pull out two great victories."

The Tigers (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) claimed victory in the morning match over California (Pa.) with a balanced offensive attack.

Taylor Donato led the team in kills with 11, but Jaime Lancellot (11) and Madison Cooler (10) also crossed the double-digit mark in kills to aid in the UWA onslaught. Kassie Till finished with 35 assists in the match.

Defensively, Jessica Akiona led with 16 digs while Rebecca Johnson notched 14 and Cooler finished with 11. Bret Luther, Donato and Cooler all registered two blocks.

In match two against West Virginia Wesleyan, UWA (25-11, 25-16, 25-20) once again used a balanced account to secure the victory.

Cooler led the attack with nine kills, Akiona and Lancellot both had eight and Donato trailed right behind the group with seven.

Till made her presence felt with 24 assists, 13 digs and three service aces. Jessica Akiona finished second in digs (9) and tied Till with three service aces as well.

For her efforts on the weekend, Lancellot was named to the All-Tournament team after posting 31 kills to lead the UWA attack.

West Alabama has one more tournament on the road before opening Gulf South Conference play. The team will head to Aiken, S.C. to participate in the USC-Aiken Invitational Sept. 7-8. Links to live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
