Tigers Show Grit in Two Wins During USC-Aiken Invitational

Aiken, S.C.– The West Alabama Volleyball team took care of business today as the Tigers won their first two matches of the USC-Aiken Invitational today with a straight set victory over Lander University and a thrilling five-set win over the hosts USC-Aiken.

"What a day! We talked all week about competing hard regardless of our circumstances and that's exactly what they did today," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "It didn't matter what the score was, what the set count was, they kept their cool and were confident in each other and their abilities. We had a ton of kids step up today and find their confidence. Kassie ran the offense extremely well and distributed the ball evenly to get all of our hitters involved and we were incredibly scrappy on defense."

In that first match UWA (25-20, 27-25, 25-17) used a consistent attack to keep Lander down for the victory. As a unit, West Alabama finished with a .295 attack percentage.

Taylor Donato led the way for the Tigers with 18 kills and two blocks. Madison Cooler also double digit kills with 15 and led the way with four service aces. Kassie Till amassed 47 assists in the contest.

Jessica Akiona finished with 18 digs and Cooler added 14.

Against the hosts USC-Aiken, the Tigers (25-18, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12) won the first set but dropped two straight before clawing back and getting the win.

Four Tigers finished with double digit kills as Cooler collected 16, Akiona notched 15 while Jaime Lancellot and Donato both had 13 each. Till was once against instrumental in getting the offense moving with 53 assists, just two off her career high of 55.

Equally impressive in the USC-Aiken contest was the defense as Bret Luther and Cooler combined to lead with four blocks each while Donato posted three blocks. Alex Fuelling posted 23 digs, Cooler had 20 digs and Akiona finished with 17.

"We are enjoying our effort and hard work tonight but understand when we wake up tomorrow it's a new day and we are going to continue to strive to get a little better each match," said Meeks.

West Alabama (5-2) returns to the court tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. against Catawba College and will wrap the tournament at 4 p.m. against Augusta University.
