Cooler, Akiona Garner GSC Weekly Recognition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– After a 3-1 run in the USC-Aiken Invitational Tournament, the West Alabama Volleyball team has two players who stood above to receive weekly Gulf South Conference honors as Madison Cooler has been named Offensive Player of the Week and Jessica Akiona received Freshman of the Week honors.

Cooler averaged 4.1 kills per set for a total of 66 kills in a four-match span. All the while, the outside hitter by trade also covered the floor with 55 digs, 10 service aces, six blocks and three assists. This is the first career GSC weekly honor for the native of Ridgeland, S.C. and the first Offensive Player of the Week honor this season for the Tigers.

Akiona has been a steady presence in the UWA lineup so far this season, but the native of Kapolei, Hawaii had her best offensive effort during the USC-Aiken tournament finishing the road trip with 37 kills and equaled that effort defensively with 58 digs and three blocks.  This is the first career GSC weekly honor for the opposite hitter and the first GSC Freshman of the Week honor this season for the Tigers.

West Alabama returns to action tonight to open GSC play against Mississippi College in Pruitt Hall. The contest is set to start at 6 p.m. in Livingston, Ala. Links to live stats and Tiger Vision Live Video are available on uwaathletics.com.
