Tigers Dazzle in GSC Opener Win over MC, 3-0

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– When the offense was on, the West Alabama Tigers brought an onslaught and held back the visiting Mississippi College Choctaws in straight sets Tuesday night in Pruitt Hall in the Gulf South Conference Volleyball opener for both squads.

"The first conference win is always tough to get. Every team is excited to start off the conference season and our conference has gotten significantly tougher in my time here," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "Mississippi College showed up to play tonight and gave us a great run in the first set. We still are struggling with controlling our own errors and that's something we have to keep mentally working on as we progress throughout the season. However, we picked up the pace in the last two sets and Kassie did another phenomenal job of spreading out our offense and getting everyone involved. This is a very talented team who continues to grow every match and I'm so excited for their potential."

UWA (25-23, 25-17, 25-11) amassed a team hitting percentage of .386 and a kill percentage of .534. Taylor Donato led with 13 kills with GSC Freshman on the Week Jessica Akiona and GSC Player of the Week Madison Cooler right behind her with 12 kills each. Kassie Till again kept the offense moving with 40 assists.

Akiona also accounted for three blocks while Jaime Lancellot and Bret Luther accounted for two blocks. Till and Donato both finished with eight digs with Rebecca Johnson right behind them with seven.

West Alabama (7-3, 1-0) returns right back to GSC action Friday night with Auburn University in Montgomery coming to Livingston, Ala. for match in Pruitt Hall scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Links to live stats and Tiger Vision Live Video available on uwaathletics.com.
