Tigers Earn First GSC Road Victory with Sweep of Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – The first road Gulf South Conference Volleyball match for the West Alabama Tigers proved to be a non-issue as UWA earned a sweep over the hosting Union Bulldogs Saturday evening.

"What a great start to our road conference streak. Winning a conference game on the road is tough against any team and we showed up to perform tonight," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "Our main goal was to work on our consistency and besides the middle of the second set I thought we did a better job of that. Our serving was tough, and our serve receive was great and that ultimately decided the outcome. Our hitters need to continue to work on different shots especially against a bigger block, but we had kids step up at big moments to put the ball away. Proud of their effort tonight."

UWA improves to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the GSC. Union falls to 4-14 and 1-4 in the conference.

West Alabama won the first set, 25-11; the second set, 25-22 and the final set, 25-15.
Madison Cooler was responsible for 19 points with 12 kills and six service aces. Cooler also tied with Jaime Lancellot with a team leading two blocks. Kassie Till continued the keep the attack moving as the reigning GSC Offensive Player of the Week tallied 30 assists.

Jessica Akiona finished with 13 digs while Rebecca Johnson and Till both has 10 digs to finish in double digits.

The Tigers posted a .268 attacking percentage during the match to keep the Bulldogs mostly off balance.

UWA returns to action Tuesday in a non-conference match against NCAA Division I opponent Jackson State in Jackson, Miss. The match is scheduled to begin 6 p.m.
