Comeback Effort Falls Short for Tigers in 3-1 Loss to VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga. – After falling behind two sets to none, the West Alabama Tigers did all they could to battle back. However, the attack ran out of gas in the fourth set as the Valdosta State Blazers claimed a 3-1 win in Gulf South Conference Volleyball action Saturday afternoon.

UWA falls to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the GSC. VSU moves to 8-11 on the season and 4-3 in the conference.

The Blazers won the first set 25-23 and the second set 25-14. West Alabama took set three 25-11 and led in the second set before the attack seemed to run out of gas as VSU won the fourth 26-24.

The Tigers had four players reach double digit kills led by 18 from Madison Cooler. Taylor Donato added 14 kills, Jaime Lancellot registered 13 kills and Jessica Akiona provided 10 kills. Kassie Till put 46 assists to keep the offense moving and added a team leading four service aces.

Akiona accounted for a team high 18 digs with Alex Fuelling getting 16 digs and Till coming up with 12 digs.

UWA outhit VSU putting up an attack percentage of .240 compared to .155 for the Blazers. However, 23 errors by the Tigers made the difference in the loss. Valdosta State committed 16 errors.

West Alabama will wrap the five-game road portion of the schedule Oct. 2 with a trip to Clinton, Mississippi to take on the Mississippi College Choctaws (7-11, 1-6) in GSC action. UWA earned a 3-0 victory over MC back on Sept. 11 to open conference competition this season.
