CBU Snatches Victory in Third Overtime over UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– West Alabama led by five in the third overtime period, but a 12-2 run by the Christian Brothers Buccaneers spelled doom for the Tigers in a 93-88 loss in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA falls to 9-5 on the season and 4-3 in the GSC. CBU improves to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

The Bucs dominated the first half 34-21 before UWA roared back with a 42-29 second half to force overtime. Both teams scored eight and 10 in the first and second overtimes respectively before Christian Brothers put the game away with a 12-7 third overtime effort.

"For a coach, games are the worst. I can't stop it. I can't control it," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "That's why practice is so important, so you have a plan together. It's so many plays, so many things we're going to go back and see if this had happened differently the outcome might have been different. There's not much difference between a win and a loss."

LaJuan Hardy posted a UWA career high with 24 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds to lead the team.

"Thank goodness he (Hardy) stepped up," said Sharpe. "If you look at it, our first half was really really bad. We couldn't make a shot. We're not going to beat anybody if we score 21 points in a half. Luckily, we got it going and bounced back. Thank goodness LaJuan got it going and made some shots for us. I can't imagine it being much worse for us, but it could have."

DeAndre Harper posted career highs of his on with 17 points and 23 rebounds which is nearly half of the 54 total team rebounds for UWA.

"He's a warrior. He's very important to our team," said Sharpe of Harper. "A lot of teams he does things that go unnoticed on a stat line or box score, but it didn't tonight. He plays really hard and he's all in. If I had to go get in a foxhole, I'm picking him first. He's going to be right there with me if we go into battle."

Josh Fleming added 19 points, six rebounds and two assists while Jake Jobling continued his march up the UWA record books with four three-pointers to help him get 13 points.

No rest for the weary as the Tigers prepare for a visit from the Union Bulldogs coming Saturday in GSC action. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gym and will be broadcast on ESPN 104.9 with a simulcast live stream on uwaathletics.com.
