Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Fleming’s Second Half Flourish Vaults Tigers to Win over Union

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Josh Fleming scored all of his 17 points in the second half to lead the West Alabama Tigers to a gritty 62-57 victory over the Union Bulldogs Saturday evening in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA improves to 10-5 on the season and 5-3 in the GSC. Union falls to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

"We're very upfront and honest with our guys," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "I don't yell at them or anything, but we hold them accountable to their roles. He's got to score. He heard about it at halftime, responded to it and stepped up. Gave us some points that we really needed."

Union took a 28-25 lead to the half before the Tigers offense finally woke up to win the second half 37-29 and grab the 62-57 final.

"Toughness. I think that has a lot to do with it, toughness," said Sharpe. "Two of our last three loss have been heartbreakers. Some emotional losses with the way we've lost them. A lot of teams could fold, but we talked about how you only get better with adversity. But only if you want to get better. We can't fold. I think the guys responded well with a great effort to defend Union."

Three other Tigers finished in double-digits as Ricky Dunnaway went for 14 points and six rebounds, LaJuan Hardy scored 12 points and Charles Tripp added 10 points. DeAndre Harper lead with 10 rebounds.

Bryson Butler scored 12 and dished six assists while Terrandus Smith scored 11 and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Union.

UWA will have some time off before hitting the road to face Alabama-Huntsviile in GSC action on Jan. 17. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN 104.9 locally and online on www.grantellbroadcasting.com
