No. 8 Union Upends West Alabama, 71-48

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Morgan Martin had a double-double and three Union players scored in double figures as the No. 8 Lady Bulldogs defeated West Alabama, 71-48, Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Union improved to 15-1, 7-1 in GSC play. West Alabama lost its third straight at home game to drop to 7-8 and 4-4.

In a game where the lead changed hands just one time, Union shot 54 percent (13-of-24) from the floor in the second half to stretch a 12-point halftime lead to as much as 25 points with 3:00 left to play.

The Lady Bulldogs scored 32 points off 23 West Alabama turnovers and limited the Tigers to just one made field goal in the fourth quarter.

Morgan scored 15 and had 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double. Jada Smith chipped in 14 points and Tiffany Rechis 12 for Union. Perkins also had a game-high six assists and six steals.

"It's January and we have freshmen leading our ballclub," said. "Lord knows what the seniors are doing. Some of our upperclassmen did not show up this afternoon."

True freshman Bria Dent scored 14 points and collected 13 rebounds for her second straight double-double, leading UWA in both categories. J'Nyiah Daniels was the only other West Alabama player in double figures with 10 points.

"Bria Dent hasn't met an enemy she doesn't think she can beat," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "She plays like she practices. She gets after it and wants to play well. Not only did she have a double-double, but she also led us in minutes (39) and assists (3).

"We have to get better with the mental part of our game. We are giving up 20-to-30 points off turnovers and that has to stop" Cram said. "I was pleased with the effort freshmen Corley Sellers and Kayla Bennett-Shaffer gave us."

West Alabama travels to Alabama Huntsville (6-8, 4-4) Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Union is host to Delta State (10-5, 5-3) on Thursday.
