Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Chargers Wear Tigers Down, 71-58

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –Baylee Johnson, Aryn Sanders and Holly Harris combined for 64 of Alabama Huntsville's 71 points to lead the Lady Chargers to a 71-58 women's basketball victory over West Alabama Thursday at Spragins Hall.

Alabama Huntsville improved to 7-8 overall, 5-4 in Gulf South Conference play. West Alabama lost its third straight, dropping to 7-8 and 4-5.

Baylee Johnson led all scorers with 27 points, converting 5-of-10 from behind the three-point line. Aryn Sanders had a double-double for UAH, scoring 25 and collecting 13 rebounds. Holly Harris chipped in 12 to round out double digit scorers for the Lady Chargers.

Alabama Huntsville led 33-25 at the half, limiting UWA to just 31 percent from the floor (9-of-29). The Tigers trailed by 15 points with 1:43 left in the second quarter but finished the first half on a 7-0 run.

The Chargers stretched the lead to 15 points in the third quarter, but West Alabama rallied to cut the UAH lead to 55-50 on a Kierra Groce jumper with 7:02 left. From there it was mostly UAH the rest of the way.

With UWA down four players to injury and mostly debilitated on the inside, Alabama Huntsville outrebounded the Tigers, 44-29, collecting 15 offensive rebounds and blocking four UWA shots.

"We were outsized inside, and it finally took its toll on us," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Having no presence of an inside game tonight hurt us. You can only go to the well so many times without an inside presence."

McKenzie Parker scored 17 points, hitting 5-of-9 three-point shots, to lead West Alabama scoring. J'Nyiah Daniels chipped in 13 points and true freshman Bria Dent picked up her third straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Latangellia Walker chipped in 10 points.

"McKenzie can shoot the basketball and she is a definite threat from the perimeter," Cram said. "Every time she shoots her teammates believe she is going to make it. She brings confidence to our team.

"We knew we had something special when we signed Bria Dent," Cram said. "She is definitely a ball player. I am glad she is on our team."

West Alabama remains on the road, visiting Lee (Tenn.) University Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff. UAH is off until Thursday when the Lady Chargers travel to Delta State.
