Men’s Hoops Preview: UAH and Lee

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– After a furious start to the 2019 conference schedule with four games in the span of seven days, the West Alabama Men's Basketball team has had a few days off and are now set to hit the road to face the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers and Lee University Flames in Gulf South Conference action for a pair of games. Tipoff against the Chargers will be Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and the Flames will be Saturday at 3 p.m. CST.
 
UWA enters the weekend 10-5 on the season and 5-3 in the GSC with the last win coming in hard fought 62-57 victory over Union. Josh Fleming scored 17, all in the second half, to lead the Tigers to victory.
 
Fleming serves as the leading scorer for West Alabama with an average of 13.2 points per game. Ricky Dunnaway also averages double figures 10.1 points along with 6.3 rebounds a game. DeAndre Harper is the leading rebounder at 7.8 boards per contest. LaJuan Hardy leads the team and is second in assists at 5.5 per game while getting is points per game average up to 9.1 a game.
 
The Tigers are scoring 68.1 points per game and have the second-best team defense in the conference allowing only 64 points per game which is just 1.2 points per game off the GSC lead.
 


UAH enters the weekend with a 12-4 record and 5-3 mark in the conference after claiming a third straight victory for the team Saturday over Lee, 75-58. Sam Orf notched a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. 
 
Orf has emerged as the leading scorer for the Chargers this season averaging 14.7 points a game while shooting 50 percent from the floor. JJ Kaplan is the second leading scorer at 1.8 points and the leading rebounder with 7.4 boards per contest. Seth Swalve is averaging 10.7 points and 4.1 assists a game.
 
Alabama-Huntsville is shooting lights out as a team sitting at 48.2 percent total from the floor and 40.6 percent from beyond the arc. Their 75.6 points per game is good for third in the conference and the defense ranks sixth in the GSC at 67.7 points a game.
 


The Lee Flames are 9-7 on the season but boast a 6-2 record in the conference. Lee lost to UAH last time out but will host the Montevallo Falcons on Jan. 17 before the Tigers make the trip to Cleveland, Tennessee.
 
Colton Blevins leads in scoring at 14.2 points per game while Ryan Montgomery is scoring 13.1 points and is the leading rebounder at 6.7 rebounds a game. Michael McGuirk is scoring at a pace of 11.1 points a game. Kentrell Evans leads the team in assists at 3.6 a contest.
 
Lee averages 70.9 points a game boats the third best defense in the GSC which holds opponents to 64.8 points a game.
