Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lee Extends Win Streak to Seven With 77-50 Win over UWA

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – No. 23 Lee (Tenn.) University took the lead with just under two minutes gone in the game and never looked back on the way to a 77-50 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win over West Alabama Saturday at Paul Dana Walker Arena.

With its seventh straight win Lee improved to 15-3 overall, 9-1 in GSC play. West Alabama dipped to 7-10 and 4-6 following its fourth consecutive loss. The win was the ninth for Lee in 10 meetings against UWA since the Lady Flames joined the GSC.

"Lee is a very good basketball team and you better have your "A" game when you play the elite teams," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Obviously we didn't bring our "A" game today. We let down mentally and didn't stick to the game plan."

Lee converted 8-of-10 three-point field goal attempts to build a 30-18 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Flames were 10-of-14 from the floor in the first 10 minutes.

Despite leading 48-29 at the half, the Lady Flames cooled a bit from the floor in the second quarter, failing to make a three-pointer in five attempts. UWA was 10-of-26 from the floor at the half but converted just 1-of-10 from long range.

Thanks to a 14-2 run to open the second half, Lee outscored the Tigers 22-9 in the third period and stretched its lead to 70-38 with 10 minutes to play. The Lady Flames stretched the lead to 35 points in the second half before allowing backups some playing time.

"We continue to make silly mistakes that makes us have to work for everything we get," Cram said. "This is the time in the season where you can't continue to make mistakes, so if our upperclassmen keep making mistakes maybe we might try to get some playing time and experience for the younger ones."

Abby Bertram scored 25 points for Lee to lead all scoring, making 6-of-10 three-point attempts. Haley Schubert chipped in 11 points for the Lady Flames, who shot 50 percent (28-of-55) from the floor for the game. Lee was true on 12-of-26 three-pointers. Lindsey Roddy led Lady Flames rebounders with eight.

Kierra Groce came off the West Alabama bench to lead the Tigers in scoring with 16 points. Freshman Bria Dent picked up her fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds while also leading UWA with four assists. J'Nyiah Daniel chipped in 10 points and Elaine Field collected nine rebounds.

"Until we get our numbers back, we have to keep plugging," Cram said. "We are trying to hang around and make our way into the conference tournament. Hopefully we will get some injury relief by the end of the week."

The Tigers shot just 30 percent from the floor, making 16-of-53. UWA was 1-of-15 from three-point distance, a paltry 6 percent.

Both teams play again Thursday. West Alabama returns home to host West Florida at 5:30 p.m. at Pruitt Hall Gym. Lee travels to Mississippi College.
