UWF Runs Away in Second Half for Win at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Florida turned a tight game into a blowout with a big second half on the way to a 76-56 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Florida improved to 14-4, 8-3 in GSC play, with its fourth consecutive win. West Alabama lost its fifth straight game, falling to 7-11 and 4-7.

The game was tied at 33 following a sloppy first half that saw the Tigers and Lady Argonauts combine for 23 turnovers. The difference in the game came down to the turnover difference in the second half, with UWA committing 13 to just six for the Lady Argonauts.

"There is secret formula for getting points off turnovers. This is college basketball," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "If we continue to give up 30 points off turnovers it's going to be a long rest of the season. We have to focus on getting the turnovers down to 10 or so."

West Florida outscored UWA 29-14 to take a 62-48 lead after three quarters. The Lady Argos made 8-of-10 field goals down stretch in the third period while the Tigers went without a field goal for just over three minutes.

The Lady Argonauts led by as many as 23 points with 3:30 left in the game before settling for the final margin after holding the Tigers to just eight points in the final 10 minutes. West Alabama led for just 28 seconds of the game.

In addition to outscoring UWA by 14 in points off turnovers, the Lady Argonauts also scored 26 points in the paint, outscoring UWA by 14 there as well.

"We can't guard our shadow in the paint," Cram said. "We have to get over ourselves and quit wallowing around in the mud and feeling sorry for ourselves."

Halee Nieman led all scorers with 27 points for West Florida while collecting nine rebounds. Toni Brewer scored 19, while Anna Hall chipped in 13 and Belle Bistrow 12.

J'Nyiah Daniels led West Alabama with 15 points. Freshman Bria Dent put together her fifth straight double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

"Bria had another double-double despite being in foul trouble early so her minutes were limited," Cram said. "I would obviously rather have her on the floor than on the bench. She makes plays.

"I expect that kind of performance from J'Nyiah," Cram said. "We need those 15 points but not the five turnovers."

The Tigers are host to Montevallo (10-8, 6-4) Saturday at 2 p.m. West Florida is host to Auburn-Montgomery (2-15, 1-8) Monday.
