Tigers Shut Down UM in 70-49 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– Five players scored in double figures and the West Alabama defense limited Montevallo to just 28 percent shooting on the way to a 70-49 women's Gulf South Conference basketball win Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

Snapping a five-game losing streak, the Tigers improved to 8-11 overall, 5-7 in the GSC. Montevallo is 9-11 and 5-5.

"I'm going to Disney World," UWA head coach Rusty Cram quipped postgame. "You hate to say that after one win, but with us coming off that losing streak it feels good to get back in the win column and this one belongs totally to our kids.

"The six inches between your ears … it's incredible what you can do when that is right," Cram said. "Our kids played hard and played smart. It's amazing what can happen when we play with a purpose."

Bria Dent led all scorers with 16 points for the Tigers. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Elaine Field added 11 points each, while Morgan Sams and J'Nyiah Daniels chipped in 10 apiece.

Kourtnie Smith was the only Lady Falcon in double figures with 13 points. Aaliyah Rice was the top rebounder for Montevallo with seven and Nautika Philpot dished out five of Montevallo's six total assists.

Garrett-Hammett and Dent led West Alabama rebounders with six. Dent's had a string of consecutive double-doubles snapped at five. Garrett-Hammett and Kim Parrish had three assists, while Field blocked two shots.

"Tazsa is hungry now. She missed it while she was injured," Cram said. "She is a guard but is having to play the five, but she is handling it without complaining."

Leading 35-26 at halftime, West Alabama played lock down defense on Montevallo in the third and fourth quarters, limiting the Lady Falcons to just 6-of-36 from the field and 1-of-13 from behind the three-point line in the final 20 minutes.

West Alabama led from tip to final buzzer, with its largest lead being the final score.

The Tigers shot 48 percent (20-of-41). Both teams collected 36 rebounds, while the Tigers made 39 trips to the free throw line, making 25. UM was 12-of-13 from the free throw line.

West Alabama plays at West Florida on Thursday. Montevallo travels to Valdosta State on Thursday.
