Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Win in Overtime against Montevallo, 70-65

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers used a 6-0 run in overtime to put away the Montevallo Falcons Saturday night in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in a matchup of two of the toughest defenses in the conference.

UWA improves to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference while Falcons fall to 9-12 and 5-6 in the GSC.

"Anytime you can win a close game where it's possession by possession, you feel like you were prepared well and they executed," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "It would've been heartbreaking if we'd loss that game. I'm glad we held on and won that game."

West Alabama won the first half 28-22 before the Falcons outscored the Tigers 37-31 in the second half to force overtime. Montevallo held a one-point advantage in the extra period, but UWA's 6-0 final run allowed the home team to gain an 11-6 advantage for the 70-65 final score.

It was another strong effort from the backcourt for the Tigers as Josh Fleming led all scorers 23 points while LaJuan Hardy added 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Forward Ricky Dunnaway notched a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

"They scored the ball and we needed them tonight," said Sharpe of his backcourt. "Montevallo is a big team with two really big kids that make it difficult to score around the basket. Even though Ricky ended up with a double-double, it was still tough down in the paint with that size. Those guys stepped up and made some plays for us and we needed it tonight from the perimeter."

West Alabama scored 23 points off turnovers after forcing the Falcons to commit 16 turnovers throughout the matchup.

UWA returns to action on Jan. 31 on the road against West Florida in Pensacola, Florida in GSC action. Tip-off for the game is set for 7 p.m.
