Men’s Hoops Preview: West Florida and Montevallo, Part II

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– This is not déjà vu. The West Alabama Men's Basketball team is set to taken on the West Florid Argonauts and the Montevallo Falcons for the second week in a row in Gulf South Conference Basketball action. However, this time the games will be on the road. 
 
The Tigers and Argos will tip-off in the UWF Field House is set for 7:30 p.m. in Pensacola, Florida. The game against the Falcons at Trustmark Arena in Montevallo, Alabama is set for 3:30 p.m.
 
UWA (14-5, 9-3) is riding a five-game winning streak and sits atop the GSC Standings and would be the top seed in the GSC Championship Tournament if the season ended today. The Tigers beat West Florida Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium 70-56 using a season high 16-made three-pointers. UWA needed overtime to dispatch of Montevallo 70-65 despite 43 combined points from Josh Fleming and LaJuan Hardy.
 
Fleming and Hardy continue to serve as the leading scorers for West Alabama, averaging 13.1 and 12.1 points respectively. Hardy also leads the team with and is second in the conference at 5.4 assists per game. DeAndre Harper is the leading rebounder at 6.9 boards a game while Ricky Dunnaway is right behind him at 6.6 rebounds a game.
 
The Tigers defense continues to be stout with an average of 63.8 points allowed which is good for the top average in the GSC and eighth best in all of NCAA Division II.
 

West Florida is now 8-12 and 4-8 in the conference after rebounding from the last-Thursday night loss to UWA with an 88-78 win over Auburn-Montgomery. Brett Carter, Jr. went for 20 points with Jon Brown going for 19 points and Maxwell Benoit for 17 points.
 
Rashaan Benson is the leading scorer for the Argos with an average of 13.0 points and the leading assist maker at 3.4 assists a game. Brown averages 12.7 points and pulls down 5.5 rebounds per game. Benoit has gotten his average up to 11.9 points a game While Jarrett Henderson is the leading rebounder at 6.9 boards a game.
 
The Argos boast a top-five defense in the league and surrender an average of 66.7 points per game.

Montevallo is 9-12 overall and 5-6 in the GSC. The Falcons will travel Valdosta State Thursday night before hosting the Tigers for the Saturday afternoon contest.
 
Two Falcons are averaging double figures with Micah Fuller leading the way at 10.7 points and De'Marco Owens is scoring 10.5 points a game and grabbing 6.8 rebounds a contest which is tied for the team lead with Wade Lowman on the boards. Lowman is also scoring 9.8 a game. Cam Copeland is now up to 4.0 assists per contest.
 
Montevallo also brings in a stout defense that is fourth best in the conference that averages 65.8 points allowed per game.
