Tigers Rally for 73-70 Win at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – West Alabama rebounded from a 19-point deficit to rally for a 73-70 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over Auburn-Montgomery Monday at the AUM Athletics Complex.
 
West Alabama improves to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in GSC play. AUM is 0-13 and 0-6.
 
Latangellia Walker drilled a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left to give West Alabama its first lead at 71-70 since a 4-3 advantage at the 9:09 mark in the first quarter. McKenzie Parker and J'Nyiah Daniels each made free throws in the final 14 seconds for the final margin.
 
Walker led all scorers with 24 points, converting 8-of-10 from both the field and the free throw line while collecting nine rebounds. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett chipped in 22 points for West Alabama, grabbed seven rebounds and three steals. Bria Dent had seven boards for UWA.
 
Auburn-Montgomery led for over 37 minutes of the game, stretching the lead to as many as 19 points on two different occasions. The Tiger defense answered the bell in the fourth quarter, outscoring AUM 25-7 in the final 10 minutes.
 
West Alabama choked off Warhawk shooters in the final 10 minutes, allowing AUM to make just 2-of-13 field goal attempts, a boon for the Tigers who made just 5-of-15 in the fourth.
 
Adding to the fourth-quarter suffocation of AUM's offense, West Alabama tied the bow on the win at the free throw line, making 21-of-31. AUM shot just 10 free throws, making six. The Tigers outrebounded the Warhawks, 44-33.
 
Evelina Avleeva led four AUM players in double figures with 19 points. Jordan Brewster chipped in 18, making 6-of-9 from the three-point line. Makaylla Bullard added 17 points and    Victoria Morales 11. Aaliyah Milord had nine rebounds, while Bullard dished out nine assists.
 
Both teams return to action on Thursday. West Alabama is host to Christian Brothers (4-7, 1-5) at 5:30 p.m. AUM is host to Union (13-1, 5-1).
