Men’s Soccer Drops Tough Match with SHC, 2-1

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Both defensive units battled hard, but the Spring Hill College Badgers were in the right place at the right time and came away with a 2-1 victory over the University of West Alabama Men's Soccer team Friday night in Tiger Stadium in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA falls to 3-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference. SHC improves to 5-6-0 on the season and 3-4-0 in the GSC.

"The boys battled until the very end tonight and I can't fault any of their effort. First half both teams canceled each other out and second half I feel we created the better of the chances but ultimately couldn't hit the back of the net," said Head coach Ross Nelson. "The GSC is one of the toughest in the country and anyone can beat anyone. Luck hasn't really been our side so far this season but I'm confident that will change. We have no choice but to dust ourselves down, keep working hard, and go again. We have a massive game Sunday against a very strong West Florida side."

Neither team scored in the first half, but SHC scored first in the second half with a goal off a deflection and by Matthew Mareno at the 45:53.

The Tigers responded to tie the game thanks to a goal by Peter Oyetunji with an assist from Maxime Correia with 70:40 passed in the match.

However, Donte Oliver scored at the 77:18 mark off another deflection to put the Badgers back up 2-1 which held as the final score.

Spring Hill had plenty of scoring opportunities and outshot the Tigers 24-8 and finished with more shots on goal, 14-5.

Adam Zayed and Kyle McLeod both took two shots, and each had an SOG to lead the Tigers. Kiaran Maule, Oyetunji and Correia also registered SOGs.

The Tigers return to action Sunday against UWF. Match is set for a 3:30 p.m. start with game links on uwaathetics.com.
