Tigers Come Up Short on Second Day of GSC/SSC Crossover

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It happened almost like a bad nightmare as the University of West Alabama Volleyball team was up 2-0 in both matches of the second day of the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Crossover, however Tigers went on drop both contests and came away winless Saturday in the Finley Center.
 
UWA's (7-16) first match came against the Spring Hill College Badgers. The Tigers won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-16, but SHC came back and won the final three sets 25-16, 25-11 and 17-15.
 
Both teams swung for low attack percentages with West Alabama compiling a .135 attack percentage to edge out a .128 percentage from the Badgers.
 
Taylor Donato, the GSC leader in kills, finished the match with 15 kills and 12 digs for a double-double for the 11th time this season. Ally Craig had 10 kills while Jessica Akiona and Lindsey Heller both added nine kills each. Grace Harris passed 23 assists and Desiree Blount finished with 15 assists
 
Rebecca Johnson served as the kills leader with 26 digs while Harris added 13 and Heloisa Niespondzinski added 12 digs. Beatriz Giordan, Bret Luther, Akiona and Donato each compiled three total blocks against SHC.
 
Against the Rollins College Tars, the Tigers won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-23 before dropping the final three games 25-18, 27-25 and 15-13 to the Tars
 
Donato notched her 13th double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. Craig also reached 15 kills and 17 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Akiona added 10 kills. Harris had 23 assists and Blount posted 18 assists.
 
Johnson and Harris both had 14 digs and Luther led the team with three total blocks.
 
As a unit, the Tigers finished with a .198 hitting percentage with Craig leading the top attackers with a .237 percentage. Rollins College turned in a .210 attack percentage and were led by Riley Spurlin and Erin Burke with 14 kills each.
 
West Alabama returns to GSC action on October 25 at the Montevallo Falcons. Match time in Trustmark Arena is set for 6 p.m. Links to live stats and live video will be available on uwaathletics.com.
