Tigers Sweep Shorter in GSC Contest

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – It was a costume party in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium, but the University of West Alabama Volleyball team was all business and took Shorter University down in three straight sets in Gulf South Conference action Friday night.
 
UWA improves to 8-18 on the season and 2-8 in the conference while Shorter falls to 7-18 and 0-10 in the GSC. 
 
"It was great to finish a match. Everyone got a chance to contribute," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "We hope to play a little cleaner tomorrow."
 
West Alabama won the first set, 25-14, the second, 25-16 and the third and final set 27-25.
 
Jessica Akiona led the way with 11 kills and put a an incredibly efficient .625 attack percentage. Ally Craig right behind her with 10 kills and posted a solid .400 attack percentage. 
 
Grace Harris posted 21 assists and three service aces while Desiree Blount finished with 13 assists and a service ace.
 
As a unit, the Tigers posted a .311 attack percentage with a combined 40 kills and eight errors on 103 total attacks.
 
Rebecca Johnson led the back row with 21 digs while Leah Koltz anchored the front line with three total blocks. Taylor Donato and Lindsey Heller both added two block assists.
 
UWA returns to action tomorrow against Lee University in GSC action. Before the match, the team will honor senior members, Donato and Johnson, for senior day. Match is set for a 1 p.m. start time. Game links are available on uwaathletics.com.
