Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Snake Bit by Turnovers in Loss to FSC

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – If there is one key statistic to point to in the University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team loss to the Florida Southern Mocs Sunday evening in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium, it would be turnovers in the 76-59 defeat.

In the second game of the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Challenge, UWA (1-1) committed 17 turnovers that turned directly into 21 points for FSC (2-0). Along with this, the Mocs outscored the Tigers 28-0 in transition.

"You want to face teams like that, but if you want to keep playing through March you have to beat teams like that," said Head coach Allen Sharpe.

Florida Southern opened the game on an 8-0 run, but the Tigers responded and took a 10-9 lead. However, the one-point advantage was the only time UWA was on top as the Mocs pushed to a 13-point halftime lead. FSC led by as much as 21 points before settling to the 76-59, 17-point victory.

LaJuan Hardy posted a double-double to lead the Tigers with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The senior guard added two assists. Ricky Dunnaway scored 14 points and added five rebounds. Mike Davis posted three blocks and two steals defensively to go along with nine rebounds and seven points.

The hot shooting for UWA didn't transfer from yesterday as the Tigers were 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from behind the arc. The free throw percentage of 70.8 (17-of-24) did remain consistent for the team.

Brett Hanson scored 26 to lead Florida Southern. Jayln Hinton added 12 points while EJ Dambreville and Jack Rauch both added 11 points.

West Alabama returns to action Tuesday night against Oakwood University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. with game links on uwaathletics.com.
