Men’s Hoops Dispatches of Oakwood for Home Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team didn't stay out of the win column long and got back on track in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium with a 73-45 win over the Oakwood University.

"Games like this are tough. You're always happy to get a win, but sometimes you're afraid of getting sloppy," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "I thought after the Florida Southern game and a tough film session, the players got better as individuals which helped us get better as a team."

The backcourt put on a strong performance for UWA (2-1) with Darron Johnson serving as the leading scorer with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. LaJuan Hardy filled the stat sheet and notched 16 points, seven assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Ricky Dunnaway handled business in the middle with 16 points and a team leading eight rebounds.

UWA controlled the game throughout, only trailing 1-0 because of a made Oakwood free throw. From there, the Tigers outscored the Ambassadors 38-18 in the first half and 35-27 in the second.

West Alabama shot 50 percent (28-of-56) as a team from the floor to post a field goal percentage above .500 for the second time this season. The team also shot 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from the three-point line and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, the Tiger defense was just as stout as ever and held the Ambassadors to 31 percent (15-of-49) from the floor and 39 percent (7-of-18) from the free throw line.

Oakwood committed 21 turnovers and UWA converted them into 20 points. The Tigers also out rebounded the visitors 38-20 and dominated points in the paint 32-14.
