Tigers Turn Back Plucky Hawks in 73-48 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Women's Basketball team controlled the contest from start to finish, but the Shorter Hawks didn't make it easy in the 73-48 non-conference matchup Wednesday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. 
 
UWA (3-0) is in the midst of the best start to the season under current Head coach Rusty Cram. Shorter fell to 0-3 to start the season.
 
The Tigers jumped out to a 17-11 lead after the first quarter and won the second quarter 20-13 to take a 37-24 lead to the half. Third quarter was close with West Alabama taking a 16-12 edge. UWA won the fourth quarter 20-12 on the way to the final 73-48 victory.
 
Zoe Watts collected the first double-double of her collegiate career as the freshman post player went for 18 points and 10 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, to go along with two assists and a block. 
 
Tazsa Garrett-Hammett collected her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds along with three assists and two steals.
 
Jada Golden posed 16 points was the steals leader with five on the evening.
 
Although UWA led for 37:35 minutes, there were times where the game was close thanks in part to turnovers. The Tigers committed 17 turnovers that were converted to 17 points for Shorter. Conversely, UWA took 28 Hawk turnovers and turned them into 24 points.
 
The Tigers shot 40 percent (28-of-70) from the floor, 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from the three-point line and 54.2 percent (13-of-24) at the free throw line.
 
Shorter was held to a 30.4 percent (17-of-56) field goal effort, 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from behind the arc and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe.
 
UWA also dominated in the paint and outscored the Hawks 42-22.
 
West Alabama returns to the court Saturday in Gulf South Conference action against Mississippi College. Tipoff in the A.E.Wood Coliseum is set for 2 p.m. with the game broadcast on ESPN 104.9.
