Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tigers Fall Short in 61-58 Loss to Lady Choctaws

CLINTON, Miss. – In a game of runs and lead changes, a West Alabama three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark to secure Mississippi College a 61-58 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

West Alabama dropped to 3-1 on the season. Mississippi College is 2-2. The game was the GSC opener for both teams. The Lady Choctaws kept the streak intact of the home team now winning the last six games in the series.

Bria Dent recorded her third double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Tazsa Garrett-Hammett chipped in 16 points, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers turned the basketball over 24 times.

"Our turnovers and missed free throws were a disaster today," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We just made too many dumb mistakes. It is frustrating to see the mental mistakes we made."

West Alabama converted 15-of-23 free throws (65 percent), and despite shooting 41 percent from the floor (21-51), the Tigers made just one three pointer in 13 attempts (7 percent).

The Tigers dominated the paint, outrebounding Mississippi College 41-27 overall and 15-8 on the offensive glass.

The Tigers put together a 20-4 run to end the second quarter, climbing to a 33-26 lead at the half. Mississippi College refused to go away, battling back to take a 47-44 advantage after three quarters. MC outscored UWA 21-11 in the third period.

Past Dent and Garrett-Hammett's output, the Tigers failed to have another double-figure scorer. Mississippi College had four led by Zariah Matthews with 17. Mikeba Jones chipped in 12 points, while Shanell Kitchens added 11 and Moriah Hurst 10 points.

"We need to have more people contribute than Bria and Tazsa," Cram said. "Bria did most of her damage in the first half, so we have to have other people step up when our opponents start keying on them."

Dent and Garrett-Hammett combined to make 14-of-22 field goal attempts, while the remainder of the West Alabama team converted just 7-of-29.

West Alabama returns to Pruitt Hall on Monday, hosting Delta State (4-1, 0-1). Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. Mississippi College hits the road to play Montevallo (4-1, 1-0) on Monday.
