Hardy Earns Second Triple-Double in Program History in Win over CAU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The last assist felt like it would never come, but a dump to Ricky Dunnaway in the final minute sealed history for LaJuan Hardy as the guard secured the second triple-double in University of West Alabama Men's Basketball history in a 65-54 win over the Clark Atlanta University Panthers Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA improved to 4-1 on the season while CAU fell to 0-6.

"He got the triple-double and all the postgame was about him, but it was about things he can do better to help us win and how important he is to our team," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "They picked the pace up on us, the tempo and brought the press. We can't turn the ball over and foul on jump shots."

Hardy led all scorers with 23 points with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The senior from Mobile, Alabama, also finished with a team leading five steals. Michael Flynn, 2019 UWA Hall of Fame inductee, had the first triple-double on Dec. 6, 1986 with 19 points, 18 rebounds and 12 blocked shots against Lambuth

Dunnaway was the only other Tiger in double figures 11 points along with seven rebounds.

The shooting wasn't as pristine as it had been for UWA so far this season with a 41.4 percent (24-of-58) effort from the floor, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) mark from behind the arc, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.

However, the usual calling card of West Alabama was there as the defense limited the Panthers to a 40.4 percent (19-of-47) for the game and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from the three-point line. Clark Atlanta was successful at the charity stripe and went 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line.

Four CAU players scored in double figures as Calvin White led with 17 points, Tyler Singleton scored 11 while Traylen Warren and Shannon Smith both scored 10 points.

The Tigers led for nearly 36 minutes in this one and won in points in the paint 36-28, however the Panthers won the battle of the boards and outrebounded UWA 35-31.

West Alabama opens Gulf South Conference play the same place the team secured last year's Regular Season Championship in the A.E. Wood Coliseum against the Mississippi College Choctaws (2-2). Tipoff in Clinton, Mississippi is set for 4 p.m. with the game being broadcast over the airwaves of ESPN 104.9.
