Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Offense Stagnant in Overtime Loss to MC

CLINTON, Miss. – A poor shooting performance and turnovers were the key ingredients in the University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team's 69-66 loss to the Mississippi College Choctaws Saturday night in Gulf South Conference action in the A.E. Wood Coliseum.

UWA falls to 4-2 and opens the conference slate 0-1. MC is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference and snapped a four-game losing streak to the Tigers.

"You can't have careless errors and make losing plays in critical times of the game," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "With the way we play each possession is critical and we can't make mistakes. You never know when the two points given up in the beginning of the game can be the difference between winning and losing."

The Tigers finished 39 percent (22-of-56) from the floor and 30 percent (6-of-20) from behind the arc. MC converted 16 UWA turnovers into 19 points.

Darron Johnson finished with 21 points to lead all scorers while Ricky Dunnaway had 16 and LaJuan Hardy scored 14 points in the loss. Mike Davis brought down nine rebounds. In all, UWA outrebounded the Choctaws 34-29.

Both teams scored 23 in the first half and 30 in the second half to get to overtime tied at 53-53. West Alabama built a 61-57 lead in the extra period but were outscored 12-5 down the stretch thanks to critical errors down the stretch.

MC ended the contest 50 percent (25-of-50) from the floor and 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from three.

Stefan Bozickovic led the Choctaws with 15 points. Winfred Ross had 14 while Jacob Taylor and Winceton Edwards both scored 10 points.

West Alabama will have to regroup and refocus for Delta State who comes to Livingston, Alabama for a GSC contest Monday night. Tipoff in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN 104.9 and on Tiger TV, UWA Athletics YouTube Channel.
