No. 15 Delta State Defeats Tigers, 67-55, in GSC Home Opener

LIVINGSTON – Delta State limited West Alabama to just 27 percent shooting to secure its first Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory, 67-55, Monday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

No. 15 Delta State improved to 5-1 overall, 1-1 in league play. West Alabama is 3-2 and 0-2.

After trailing by six at the end of the first quarter, West Alabama controlled the second period and took a 35-33 advantage into the half. It wasn't pretty for the Tigers the rest of the way.

Bringing a bucket advantage into the third period, West Alabama managed to convert just 3-of-16 (18%) from the floor in the third quarter and 7-of-34 (20%) in the second half. Delta State held a four-rebound advantage halfway through but ended up outrebounding UWA 34-21 in the second half and 60-43 over the course of the game.

"It is obvious to anybody who watched the game we were not moving on offense," Cram said. "The other thing is obviously rebounding. I was so disappointed in our lack of effort in rebounding.

"In the second half we didn't have anybody put the ball in the hole," Cram said. "We didn't play good offense in second half and totally broke down on the glass."

Leading the GSC in defense coming into the game, West Alabama limited Delta State to just 36 percent from the floor but got caught up in a 1-for-12 offensive dry spell in the fourth quarter to let DSU stretch its lead.

Nia Johnson led the Lady Statesmen attack with 17 points, followed by Kirstin Brown with 14 and Shaniyah Buford with 13. Zyaire Ewing collected 16 rebounds and Quantesha Patterson 15.

"They exploited what we didn't have due to some foul trouble," Cram said. "Give credit to them for doing a great job.

"They are too big and so experienced inside," Cram said. "Those are power players in there who are super athletic and can jump out of the gym."

Naelyn Rios led West Alabama scoring with 14 points, followed by Tazsa Garrett-Hammett with 11. The pair were a combined 8-for-33 from the field. Garrett-Hammett and Bria Dent had nine rebounds each for the Tigers.

West Alabama begins a three-game non-conference stretch by hosting Tougaloo Monday at 5 p.m. Delta State travels to LeMoyne-Owen on Dec. 5
