Tigers Beat AUM in Five Sets, Johnson Sets New Career High

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – For the second time this season the University of West Alabama Volleyball team and the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks played a five-set epic, but this time the Tigers came away the victors in Gulf South Conference action Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. 
 
UWA improves to 10-19 overall and 4-9 in GSC competition. AUM falls to 16-12 and 7-6 in the conference. 
 
The Tigers won the first game 25-19, but the Warhawks won two straight sets 25-18 and 25-21, respectively. However, UWA responded and won a hard fought forth game 25-22 before winning the fifth and grueling final set, 15-12, to win the match, 3-2.
 
"We had consistent effort throughout tonight's match, and never let down," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "We made some mature plays in key moments, and made adjustments quickly as needed."
 
Rebecca Johnson, the reigning GSC Defensive Player of the Week, set a new career high with 31 digs and finished just one assist shy of a double-double with nine.
 
Jessica Akiona led the Tiger attack with 14 kills on a .250 attack percentage and added four digs and two assists. Taylor Donato posted a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Ally Craig crossed the double-digit kill mark as well with 10 kills.
 
Grace Harris notched a double-double with 29 assists and 19 digs while Desiree Blount passed 16 assists with eight digs.
 
Bret Luther led the front line with four total blocks and tied the team led with Harris for service aces with both players having three each.
 
Both teams played the contest about even offensively which helped to lead to a five-set match as West Alabama put together a .183 team attack percentage with 58 kills and 24 errors on 186 total attacks. Auburn Montgomery posted a .144 attack percentage with 60 kills and 32 errors on 194 attacks.
 
Nyah Whittlesey had 14 kills to lead AUM while Sommer Rhea and Giada Pais-Marden both had 13 kills each.
 
UWA returns to action tomorrow in Pruitt Hall for the final home match of the 2019 season against West Florida at 6 p.m. Links to live stats and live video are available on uwaathlteics.com.
