Tigers Make it Splash in Home Opening Win over Eckerd

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team opened the 2019-2020 season with a fiery offensive effort Saturday night in Pruitt Hall with 14 three-pointers in an 82-63 win over the Eckerd College Tritons in the first day of the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Challenge.

UWA (1-0) wound up 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from behind the arc which easily outshined any game last season where the defending GSC Champions shot 20 or more threes.

The defense was just as intense as intense as the offensive was explosive and held the Tritons to 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor throughout the contest.

In fact, UWA limited Eckerd to 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the first half. West Alabama built an 18-2 lead before EC hit a second shot from the field.

The Tigers took a 32-23 lead to the half and won the second half as well 50-40 to come away with the 82-63 final margin.

Darron Johnson was spectacular off the bench and finished with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and a 5-of-7 effort from behind the arc. The senior guard added two steals.

LaJuan Hardy picked up where he left off as the First Team All-GSC selection scored 19 points and added four steals, three assists and two rebounds.

In his UWA debut, Justin Allison reached double figures with 11 points, finished with a team leading five assists and added three rebounds and a steal.

Deandre Harper led the team with six rebounds.

As a unit, the Tigers were 54 percent from the floor (27-of-50) and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free throw line.

West Alabama returns to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Florida Southern. The Mocs won their matchup 92-74 against Delta State earlier in Pruitt Hall Gym this evening. Game links will be on uwaathletics.com.
