UWA Earns Road Win over Shorter, 90-65

ROME, Ga. – The University of West Alabama men's basketball team answered each jab from the Shorter University Hawks with a devasting hook to take a 90-65 Gulf South Conference victory Monday night at the Winthrop-King Centre.

UWA improves to 8-2 on the season and 2-1 in the GSC. Shorter falls to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.

"Every win is a good win, but I thought we had some lapses defensively in particular to scouting reports and personnel where we let a shooter get his shot and stuff like that," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "Road wins in the Gulf South are tough to come by and we got that, but there's a lot more room for improvement."

Those defensive lapses show as Shorter put up the second highest opponent shot percentage saw far with a 49 percent (24-of-49) effort from the floor and highest opponent three-point percentage with a 47.1 percent (8-of-17) effort from behind the arc.

While UWA may have struggled to slow the Hawks, Shorter had no success slowing West Alabama. The Tigers shot 51.7 percent from the field, 55 percent (11-of-20) from the three-point line and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free throw line.

"Making shots makes everything easier. Makes things smoother. It helps your defense," said Sharpe.

Rene Scott finished with his UWA high of 21 points along with four assists and three rebounds. LaJuan Hardy went for 16 points, six assists, four rebounds, a block and a steal.

Mike Davis produced a solid outing with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists including a spectacular diving rebound and assist that led to a three-point play for Scott.

"Those are the types of plays we have to have from these guys. You can't expect a pat on the back when you make a great play. We need it done," said Sharpe.

Ricky Dunnaway scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds while Deandre Harper also scored 10 points with three rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Shorter was led by 16 points from Ja'Cori Wilson and 11 points each from Bryan Polanco and Keeving Etienne.

There is still work to be done this side of the holiday break as UWA hosts Newberry Friday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
"Newberry is pretty good. We need a good couple of days of preparation for these guys," said Sharpe. "Newberry might not be a team our local people are familiar with, but they're a good team."

Tipoff against Newberry is set for 4 p.m. with game links available on uwaathletics.com.
