Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Grab Convincing Win over CBU for Tenth Straight

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The West Alabama Tigers prepared the proper game plan to slow down the Christian Brothers Buccaneers and the team executed on the way to a 65-51 win Thursday night in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action the Canale Arena.

The Tigers improve to 19-5 overall and 14-3 in the GSC with the tenth straight win. CBU falls to 16-8 and 12-5 in the conference."

"We wanted to take away the threes. We wanted to be slow and hesitant on doubling in the post," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "We kind of knew that would allow (Adam) Dieball to score some and it did. But what it did was it didn't allow for three-point shots and didn't allow for backdoor cuts where he hits guys. We wanted to lock in on the other four guys and take our chances with Dieball to go one on one in the post."

While Dieball finished with 21 ponts and 15 rebounds, the defensive effort held the Bucs to 13.6 percent (3-of-22) from beyond the arc.

"The difference was, I think was that they didn't make many threes and one of them was right there when the game was over," said Sharpe. "Because we held them from the three-point line, that gave a chance to win and do it pretty handily down the stretch."

Meanwhile, UWA shot outstanding from beyond the three-point line going 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from outside.

"We have adequate shooters, we don't great shooters or a bunch of them," said Sharpe. "But when you have good shooters, one or two of them go in and then it starts getting contagious. We made more than we normal make and had some timely ones."

DeAndre Harper and Josh Fleming both scored 13 points to lead the Tigers. LaJuan Hardy finished with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists while Tavares Tolliver added 10 points and five rebounds.

"I think it makes the guys believe they have to buy in to guarding and holding people to win," said Sharpe. "Look, we hit 12 threes and still only scored 65. We have to guard people and that's what gives us a chance to win. They've seen it and believe it. They've won enough games to see it and keep buying in to it."

West Alabama returns to action Saturday on the road in Jackson, Tennessee against Union University. Tip-off at the Fred DeLay Gymnasium is set for 4 p.m.
